NetworkView - Network Discovery and Management Tool
The first question that comes to mind is “What is the NetworkView” application? To put it bluntly, NetworkView is a compact network discovery and management tool for Windows. This is a Windows utility that will help you get a full graphical map of your network; it will uncover all TCP/IP nodes and draw a full graphical map (including routes) using DNS, MAC addresses, SNMP WMI, NetBIOS and TCP Ports information.
A second question comes to mind: “What sort of functionality can you expect to get from the NetworkView application?” Understanding the functionality NetworkView provides will help you get a better idea if you want to get NetworkView or not. So here is what you can expect to get from NetworkView, from a functionality point of view:
- Using DNS, SNMP, Ports, NetBIOS and WMI, discover TCP/IP nodes and routes
- Obtain MAC addresses and NIC Manufacturer Names
- Monitor nodes and receive alerts
- Control and Secure your network with the SNMP MIB Browser, the WMI browser and the Port Scanner.
You can run NetworkView from your desktop computer, just like you do every other application. The good news is that if you are constantly on the go, you can put NetworkView on a portable storage device like an USB stick and take the application with you. NetworkView can be run from an USB stick without a problem.
Before you go get NetworkView and put it to the test, take a look at the following technical bits and pieces:
Download – the download weighs in at some 1.8MB. At such a lightweight download size, getting NetworkView off the web and onto your computer will only take a moment.
Installation – installing the application is a straightforward process that goes along smoothly and rapidly. Just follow the instruction presented by the setup wizard and you will be done in no time at all. At the time of writing this and according to the developer, NetworkView provides support for Windows 2000 Professional, Server or Advanced Server, Windows XP Home or Professional, Windows Server 2003 Standard or Enterprise, and any of Vista and Windows Server 2008. Windows 95, 98, ME and NT4 are not supported.
Limitations – you can use the trial version of NetworkView free of charge for a trial period of 30 days. The Export function is disabled in the trial version.
